Where to stay - Thorpeness or Aldeburgh?

Thorpeness - was created by local landowner G.S. Ogilvie in the early 1900's as a resort for wealthy Edwardian holidaymakers. It was Ogilvie who had the vision to create the 64 acre Thorpeness Meare, a shallow boating lake dug by hand and still much enjoyed today.

The village also boasts a Golf Course, Tennis Courts, Village Shop, Inn, and Cafe. The Beach is mainly shingle. Thorpeness is quieter and more relaxed than its larger neighbour, Aldeburgh.

The pace of life quickens during the busy Summer months reaching a peak with the Thorpeness Regatta & Fireworks held annually in August. We love Thorpeness for leisurely strolls along the beach, gazing at the stars in the night sky, and the odd pint of beer at the Dolphin Inn!

Aldeburgh - Has been a fashionable holiday destination for many years with many families coming back season after season. The Town has a very good range of Independant Shops, Restaurants, Cafes & Pubs which serve the famous Adnams Ales!

It has a good Golf Course, Cinema, Museum, Sailing Club, proximity to Snape Maltings and Concert Hall, and some great places to buy freshly caught fish straight from the Sea.

Aldeburgh has a busier feel than nearby Thorpeness. Events not to be missed include the Literary Festival, Snape Concert Season and The Aldeburgh Carnival in August. We love Aldeburgh for Fish and Chips on the beach, Ice Creams from Ives, strolling along the High Street, and Family Dinners at The Regatta!
